Anyone searching for a "universal festival cap" quickly runs into a wall of webshops that sell the product without explaining what it actually is. A cap, yes. For festivals, fine. But why universal? And how does it differ from a regular bottle cap? In this article we lay everything out, from what it is to when you use it and what is involved if you want them printed with your own logo.
The short version
A universal festival cap is a resealable plastic cap that fits virtually all common PET bottles sold at festivals and in hospitality venues. You drink your bottle part-way, you twist the cap on, you hang it on your keyring or belt loop, and you have your drink sealed and with you. No more spills, no more warm beer in your bag, and as a bonus: nobody can put anything in your bottle unnoticed.
The term "universal" refers to the main difference with a regular screw cap: this cap is not made for one specific bottle from one specific brand, but fits virtually all standard-size PET bottles in circulation in the Netherlands and Belgium.
What does "universal" mean exactly?
A PET bottle for a common soft drink (Coca-Cola, Spa, 33cl Bavaria bottles, Heineken, Hertog Jan) has a thread that is nearly internationally standardised. That standard is called PCO-1881 and is the most common variant in Europe.
A universal festival cap is built on that PCO-1881 standard. In practice that means:
- Fits: virtually all 33cl and 50cl PET bottles of soft drink, water and beer
- Usually fits: 1-litre and 1.5-litre bottles (same neck size)
- Does not fit: glass bottles with crown caps (Heineken deposit bottles, Belgian specialty beers), wine bottles, and some specialty drinks with a different closure
For most situations at a festival, trade show or event this means: yes, your cap fits the bottle you are holding.
What is a universal festival cap for?
The cap has three functions that set it apart from a normal bottle cap:
1. Seal your drink and carry it with you
The primary function. You do not have to finish your bottle before moving on to the next stage. Drink sealed, in the bag, walk on. No more drips on your phone or in your bag.
2. Protection against spiking
At festivals and in hospitality venues "spiking" (putting something in someone's drink without their knowledge) is a real risk. With a sealed cap your bottle stays closed as long as you do not open it yourself. A simple physical barrier that works. We wrote about this earlier with more background: drink protection at festivals.
3. Marketing item that stays in view
Hence the name Party-cap. After the festival most people hang the cap on their keyring. Not because it is pretty, but because it is handy for the next event. For companies or brands that print their logo on the cap, that means days, often months of visibility with the target audience. A flyer is in the bin before the end of the day. A festival cap with logo is still hanging from someone's bag three months later.
What makes it different from a regular screw cap?
A normal screw cap (the standard plastic PET cap) is disposable material. Open a fresh Coca-Cola and the seal breaks and the cap is functionally ready for the bin. It does reseal, but often leaks and is not designed to be opened and closed repeatedly.
The universal festival cap is a separate cap, thicker and sturdier in build, with a ring on it so you can hang it on a keyring. It is designed to be reused repeatedly across multiple bottles, not to be discarded after the first one.
It is also often made from a different material. At Party-cap the caps are biodegradable. That is not a selling point for the festival audience itself (they look at function), but it is relevant for the companies and brands that buy and hand out the caps, and that want to be able to say something about responsible merchandise in their communication or annual report.
With or without bottle opener
Two versions exist:
- Standard universal festival cap: only the resealable cap, with ring for your keyring
- Festival cap with integrated bottle opener: the same cap, but in a version where you can also open a crown cap with it
For companies using the cap as a giveaway at a corporate trade show, the standard is fine. For brands speaking to a festival audience, the version with opener often works better because it is multifunctional. Both versions are fully custom printable.
Why choose logo printing?
A blank festival cap has no marketing value. The same cap with your logo on it does, and it is remarkably cheap compared to the durability of the impression. A few numbers to illustrate:
- A flyer: average lifespan is a few minutes to an hour, then in the bin
- A festival wristband: stays on until the shower at home, then gone
- A drink holder: stays at the festival, then gone
- A printed festival cap: stays months to a year on someone's keyring
For the kind of companies that invest in broader brand awareness (banks, recruiters, insurers, energy providers, dance labels) that is a far better cost-per-impression than disposable merchandise.
Practical points when ordering
If you are considering having universal festival caps printed for your company, brand or event: a few things worth knowing in advance.
Quantities
The minimum order quantity is usually 100 pieces. Up to 10,000+ is no problem, provided you discuss it in advance so production planning lines up. For exact volume pricing see our complete guide on festival cap printing.
Cap and logo colour
At Party-cap you choose the cap colour and the logo colour separately. A black cap with a white logo, an orange cap with a black logo, or a cap in your exact corporate colour (Pantone matching is possible). Multi-colour logos are printable without surcharge.
File format
You get the best result with a vector file (AI, EPS, PDF). A PNG or JPG works too if the resolution is high enough. In case of doubt we send a free digital proof in advance, which shows you exactly how your logo will look on the cap. Only after your approval do we print.
Lead times
Production in the Netherlands means no import wait of weeks. Most orders are deliverable within 1 to 2 weeks after proof approval. Rush orders are often shorter, on request.
Who is this festival cap not for?
Good to know: this product is not intended for festival organisers themselves. Festivals want visitors to finish their bottle quickly so they generate more bar revenue. A resealable cap works against that. The audience for the festival cap is:
- Companies attending corporate trade shows, events or career fairs
- Brands and labels aimed at the festival or dance audience
- Promotional product and corporate gift suppliers who resell the cap to their own customers (see our reseller programme)
